15-year-old hangs self in Patna hostel room

A 15-year-old student allegedly hanged himself from the ceiling fan of his hostel room at a private residential school in Kumar Toli in Masaurhi adjoining Patna on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Priye Ranjan, son of Kunal Kumar of Rupaspur under Dhanrua police station. The boy returned to the hostel with his elder brother Prince after the Holi holidays. School authorities said they found him hanging in their hostel while other children were playing on the ground. On seeing the body, the boarders informed the hostel manager and the school principal.

Sanjay Kumar, SHO of Masaurhi police station, said that Priya's father reached the police station with the body after which a post-mortem was conducted at the PMCH. "The preliminary investigation revealed that the boy was not willing to return to the hostel after the Holí holiday. Kunal left his sons in boarding school and left,” he said.

“Priye used a gamcha (a long thin cotton towel) to tie a noose around his neck to hang himself. No suicide note was found in his room,” said Sanjay. Priya's father alleged that the hostel warden was forcing the students to work due to which his son committed suicide. However, police denied the allegations and said they had spoken to other diners and their parents.

The SHO said, “No written complaint has been received from the boy's father. The police will investigate the matter if such a complaint is received."
